While everyone else continues to enjoy the party, Chrissy helps me take the pizza inside. “How’s school going?” I ask as I combine pizzas into one box.

“Good,” she chirps. “I’ll graduate early and get started on college.”

“That’s fantastic,” I beam. “You know I appreciate all your help with Colby, but if it ever gets too much, you let me know.”

“He’s no trouble at all. I love the little guy. Plus, he gives me practice for when I become a teacher.”

“You’re going to make an amazing teacher,” I tell her and mean it. Chrissy is smart, loves kids and is good with them, and she genuinely cares about their education.

She peeks at the clock. “Thanks. I hope so. I’ve got to get going. Gotta work the library tonight. I’m going to tell Colby bye and head out.”

I watch as she makes her way to where Colby and Flynn are swinging. He throws his arms around her neck quickly and she kisses his forehead. If Colby had a sister… I seek out Callen to find him cornered by the women. Penny and Kate are vying for his attention, chatting him up. I snort into my empty house. Chatting with a man whose universal code of conversation is a series of grunts and nods.

They’re both going at him from different angles. Penny flips her hair and giggles, playing the bimbo blonde that she’s not. While Kate has her shoulders back and head held high with confidence. This has her breasts pushing higher.

Amusement is written all over Callen’s expression as he stands there, not putting much talking in. It grates me. Jealousy drives a knife into my spine and rides down. Memories of last night flash behind my eyes. Again. The way he felt. His sounds. The way he looked at me like I was perfect and everything he’s ever wanted. He made me want more. More him. More skin. Just… more.

“You look like you’re about to hump his leg to mark your territory,” Stella startles me, yanking me out of the memories.

My head swings her way, and instantly a blush splatters my face. Embarrassment paints my cheeks and I hate it. “What?”

She gives me a “cut the shit” look.

“They have different approaches,” I tell her, tipping my chin toward them. “Who do you think will win?”

Another look, this time with a brow arching.

“Sure, he’s good looking, but I’m not interested. Colby loves him, though.” My mouth won’t stop.

She continues to stare.

“He overheard Kevin saying some pretty nasty things to me and he hung up on him.” Why can’t I shut up?

“Kevin’s a piece of shit,” Stella tells me. “But that still doesn’t explain why you’re watching them when he clearly has been watching you.”

Surprised, my brows hike high.

Stella sighs. “Don’t act like I’m stupid or blind for that matter. You haven’t shown a drop of interest in a man for a year. But the way you look at him, he’s got your attention. Why are you scared of it?”

She always calls it like she sees it, and it’s usually spot on.
